WINNING ESSAY by Monica Martinek
As a scrapbook store owner, I am always looking for the hottest products, when along came Seven Gypsies papers and embellishments. One of the papers struck me as one of the best background papers ever for a Mag Time Frame - deep bronze colored watch faces . I just couldn't wait! I ran around my store like a mad woman with a purpose, grabbing lots of papers, embellishments, fibers and more. I furiously ran my background paper through my Xyron and then searched for a coordinating paper to cover the metal portion of my Mag Time Frame. Upon finding that, I searched for even more goodies.
When I returned home that night, I showed my husband and family my Mag Time Frame . They loved it and wondered which one of my teachers had created it. I had to laugh and tell them IT WAS ME! The design was not in my usual style. By the end of the day it had tons of "things" hanging off it, hinges pounded into the sides and so much more. I went upstairs to search out the perfect picture for my Mag Time Frame. I looked through a box of black and white photos and found one of my Grandmother from the 1940's. I then discovered I had something of hers that would tie the frame and picture together perfectly - one of her old watches. I decided to let it drape over one of the corner edges of my frame. I just loved how it was all coming together - except for the outside edges.. That night I woke up around 3am with the answer: UTEE (ultra thick embossing powder). I chose a bronze color to coordinate with my background paper.
That morning as I was working in my store, I was madly melting UTEE onto the sides of my Mag Time Frame. Usually I am very attentive to customers as they shop in my store, but this was different. I knew I was about to complete a beautiful Mag Time Frame . As my customers were shopping, I was melting. When I finished it, I was very proud of myself. I had certainly stepped out of the box when it came to the use of scrapbooking products . I floored my family, friends and customers. What began as a simple idea to showcase Seven Gypsies and Mag Time Frames had become so much more. My Mag Time Frame became a sold out class after so many requests from customers, which has lead to even more Mag Time Frame classes.
I'll never forget that first class. students creating beautiful Mag Time Frames, each with a long lost loved one in mind. And the title of my Mag Time Frame which is just beneath the picture of my Grandmother: T I M E, goes so quickly by. |
